LaFayette Sleep Laboratory provides evaluation for sleep disordered breathing and related conditions. These include sleep apnea, hypoxemia (low blood oxygen), sleep movement disorders, inability to maintain sleep, insomnia, and excessive daytime sleepiness, such as narcolepsy.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a common condition involving 10-15% of adult men and 5-10% of adult women. These people usually snore loudly keeping their spouses awake, they are chronically tired and often fall asleep inappropriately in the day time. The condition is associated with high blood pressure, irritability, mood swings, headaches, nightmares, moving about in bed, increased risk of heart attacks, and auto accidents.
Polysomnography (sleep study) involves an overnight stay to confirm the diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. At times a second night's stay will be needed to arrange permanent home therapy with nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP).
Other therapies include: weight loss, abstinence from alcohol, nicotine and caffeine, throat surgery (UPPP), dental appliances and tracheostomy. These therapies have varying levels of effectiveness.
